After the Second World War the leaders of international student movement have clearly recognized the importance of international youth contacts. They realized that global understanding can be reached only with the help of cultural exchange and travels. In the beginning of 1950s an idea about creation of a united document confirming the student status throughout the world appeared. This wonderful idea could be brought to life in 1953. Thus, the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) was created!
ISIC — the International Student Identity Card — was created in 1953 under the auspices of UNESCO. Since then over 50 million students made use of ISIC card during travels to obtain discounts for goods and services.
The central task of ISIC is to promote international cooperation and development of student and youth exchange via provision of various discounts for transport, accommodation etc, serve the students’ interests and confirm the student status worldwide.
ISIC Association is one of five member associations of ISTS — the International Student Tourism Confederation (established in 1949).
At present ISIC is the only worldwide recognized card confirming identity and status of a studying person, this card is being issued in 120 countries of the world, providing over 40 thousand discounts and benefits to its holders, the programme is being supported at the national level and accounts for 4,5 million members of ISIC community.
